Silicone O-Ring (MQ, VMQ, PVMQ) Material Description
Physically, silicone o-rings are based on silicon, an element derived from quartz. To create this class of synthetic elastomers, pendant organic groups such as methyl, phenyl, and vinyl are attached to silicon atoms. Different additions of side chains can achieve significant variations in properties. Silicone o-rings have excellent heat, ozone, and corona resistance and have good dielectric stability and resistance to many oils, chemicals, and solvents. Silicone o-rings maintain the best flexible properties at low temperatures but have low tensile strength and low wear and tear resistance.
Silicone o-rings may also come in a metal detectable variation, while retaining the same qualities as the general silicone o-ring compound. Global O-Ring and Seal supplies silicone o-rings that are compliant with FDA standards, and are suitable for use in food and beverage production lines, as well as medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Both silicone and metal detectable silicone o-rings meet FDA compliance.
Cure System: Peroxide-Cured
Standard silicone o-ring compounds are usually peroxide-cured. Platinum-cured compounds offer better flexible properties and very low volatile matter. Platinum-cured silicone o-rings are usually applied in medical systems or other applications requiring low volatile matter. However, they need to be produced in a clean room and require a higher cost of platinum catalyzed, making them more expensive than peroxide-cured ones.
