AFLAS® O-Ring Material Description

AFLAS® is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE, FEPM) and propylene, also known as TFE/P. This elastomer was developed by Asahi Glass (Japan) and sold under the AFLAS® trade name.

AFLAS® o-rings have much better base resistance and steam resistance than FKM. AFLAS® o-rings have similar chemical resistance to FFKM and is a much more cost effective material.

Thanks to its unique chemical resistance properties, as well as the cost advantage over FFKM, AFLAS® finds ever-increasing applications in various industries.

Application Benefits Description
Downhole Chemical Resistance, Heat Resistance, Steam Resistance In certain geographic regions, O-rings used downhole are exposed to corrosive gas like H2S, high temperature steam, or basic mud. Rubber parts made of AFLAS® survive longer under these harsh conditions.
General Steam Steam Resistance, Anti-Corrosive FKM will harden if it comes into contact with steam which contains even a very small amount of anti-corrosive. AFLAS® has excellent steam resistance and has been found extremely reliable in this application.
Mechanical Seals Amine, Alkali Chemical Resistance O-rings in mechanical seals are required to be resistant to various chemicals in one environment. AFLAS® has superior chemical resistance compared to FKM.
Marine Engines Anti-Corrosive Coolant inside large diesel engines contains anti-corrosive additives, and some of these can damage FKM. Because of this, a higher cost FFKM is sometimes used. However, leakage problems can often occur due to the poor elasticity of FFKM. AFLAS® has similar chemical resistance to FFKM and better elasticity. AFLAS® not only has a cost advantage but also a longer service life in this kind of application.
